Wordpress Dashboard

Although managing a website may feel daunting, have no fear! The Wordpress system is designed with an easy and clear menu system. The main page behind your site is also known as the Dashboard. From the Dashboard, you can accomplish your most common tasks.   Notice how the toolbar below has a Manage and a Write link.

To Create a New Page or Post

Page is used to create a main page of content.  For example, “About Us” is a main page that doesn’t change often.  A page will show up as a main navigational link in the menu bar on your site.  To create a new page, click on Write, and then Page.

Dashboard Navigation Bar

Think of a Post as an article in a newspaper.  Its content that changes everyday and is organized chronologically.  Create a new Post for blogs, journal entries, or news items.  To create a Post, click Write then Post.

When creating a new Post or Page, make sure to:

  • Give your entry a title that incorporates key words that you want search engines to pick up.
  • Use tags to capture keywords, phrases or common themes of the content.  Tags are important for search engines as well. Tags can used to create an “Index” of your site.
  • You can password protect a page or post so that only people with the password can access that content. You’ll find this option under the “Password Protect this…” towards the bottom of the edit page.
  • Save your work but continue editing by clicking the Save button.
  • Choosing Save only saves what you have created so far. Your content is still not available on the web though. The Publish button will save and make the post or page available on your site.
  • The Permalink is a way to add a URL “friendly name” to the particular page or post. For example, if your permalink is “friendsvisit” then someone can access this entry by going to http://<your site>/friendsvisit.

Managing Existing Content

To edit a page, post, tags, and links, use the Manage link.  You’ll see a list of types of content that you can edit.  After clicking on the particular type of content you can edit, you’ll see a list.  Click on the title of an item to edit it.
