Buying a new computer in a recession

Sometimes, you *need* a new computer, whether your budget likes it or not. Maybe your current computer exploded. Or, maybe it’s too slow to be useful. Regardless of the situation, you need a hot tip on what to buy.

Dell VostroI get asked the “what computer should I get?” question so often that it warrants it’s own blog.  I have exposure to all sorts of operating systems, computers, servers, and laptops, and I have come to some definite conclusions to share with you. Here’s my professional advice:

  • Consider the future of operating systems as a factor.  Windows 7 is around the corner and it works a lot like Windows Vista.  I don’t consider that a plus.  Meanwhile, Linux and Mac OS are becoming so efficient that it may be worth considering getting off the Windows “train.”
  • Next, I always suggest a laptop over a desktop.  They use space and energy more efficiently.  The price difference between a laptop and a comparably spec’d desktop is insignificant now.  And the added advantage of portability trumps any price difference.  Even if you only take your laptop off your desktop twice a year, that’s still something you can’t do if you bought a desktop.
  • If you’re going to stick with PC’s, I suggest:
    • you stay away from HP.  My clients have too many software, hardware, and usability issues for me to recommend any HP product.
    • I like Dell’s Vostro series.  Well built, clean OS install (be sure to get the “XP downgrade”), and priced cheap.  Don’t worry about specs – just go for the model in your price range.
  • MacbookIf you’re ready to make the switch, I cannot stress how much life will be easier moving to a Apple.  The desktop iMac or the Macbook are two wonderful choices.  A little more than comparable PC’s, the extra money you spend will be worth it.  You’ll be saving time using intuitive software, having the best reliability in the industry, and actually enjoy using a computer again.
